Parkinson’s Association offers services, support

The Parkinson’s Association of San Diego (parkinsonsassociation.org) provides education and family services to all areas of San Diego County with a mission of improving the quality of life for those affected by Parkinson’s. In addition, we support promising local research with a vision of “a world without Parkinson’s.”

We estimate that there are 16,000 people in the county living with Parkinson’s, but the community impact is far greater, with an additional 45,000 family members and care partners affected. Parkinson’s is a chronic neurodegenerative condition that affects a person’s ability to move, characterized by slowness of movement, muscular rigidity, postural instability and resting tremor. Parkinson’s can also impact thinking, with depression and anxiety affecting more than 50 percent of those living with the condition. Parkinson’s is most common in those older than 60, but 10 percent of those who are diagnosed are 40 or younger.

The Parkinson’s Association offers more than 20 programs to support persons and families dealing with Parkinson’s. Our education programs include the Good Start Workshop for Newly Diagnosed and the Financial & Legal Wellbeing Workshop Series to assist families in planning for their Parkinson’s journey. We support our families through Clinical Counseling Services and more than 20 support groups throughout San Diego County. In addition, we now offer a quarterly magazine (Parkinsonian.org) to provide information on research, treatment and living well to the San Diego community and beyond.

To help support what we do, we host two fundraising events each year: a Gala in the fall and our Step by Step Event & 5K each April, drawing researchers and health care professionals from across the Southern California region to share information with patients and families. The success of these events would not be possible without our participants and generous sponsors. Information on sponsorship opportunities and its benefits can be obtained by emailing contactus@parkinsonsassociation.org

Thank you to the San Diego community for supporting the Parkinson’s Association since our founding in 1989, allowing us to provide programs and services for all of those affected by Parkinson’s.
