The Transcript recently talked with Russ Sande, Managing Principal of Cresa San Diego, who is responsible for business operations and orchestrated the relocation: "We did something rather creative for ourselves, which is what we often do for our tenant/clients."
Russ continued, "We didn't want to take a hit by virtue of subleasing, so we turned to our landlord and inquired about the rest of their portfolio. We discovered that they had this beautiful, undeveloped space at 3580 Carmel Mountain Road. We were able to expand and tear up our existing lease, eliminating our remaining obligation.
"This first generation space was our clear preference because it provided the opportunity for us to create exactly what we wanted. Keep in mind that I don't know too many people who spend as much time as we do in office buildings – it's the essence of what we do. We basically live in office buildings.
"We have over 50 offices in all major U.S. cities and every one of our Partners thinks we work at the beach! We collaborate with our other offices. They visit us regularly and always tease us about our weather and our abundance of recreational opportunities, so we decided to develop a beach theme.
"We hired architect Jeff Hollander of Hollander Design Group. Much like us, they function as a team, and they helped us considerable with the design and permitting process. We see a lot of build-outs and a great deal of creative applications. We began with a blank palette. We wanted a lot of natural light and an open ceiling... we wanted the volume. Understanding that, Jeff suggested we hang surf boards in the ceiling, to provide a unique look and offer a form of soundproofing.
"We were determined to create a space that would reflect our culture: an inviting, fun, yet professional, place, where everybody would be eager to come to work. This space is totally conducive to what we do as a team. And I underscore "team" because our structure was a major consideration in designing our new workspace.
"In our former location, everyone had a private office. Now, each of us are in a work station. This environment fosters collaboration, which we believe is both essential to our growth as a company and exponentially improves our ability to service our clients.
"Collaboration, both from within our San Diego office and across Cresa's global platform, creates a brain trust of resources that we then apply to every client requirement...it's a total team effort. We believe our new office projects our culture and how we do business."
"There's more to it than creating this beach scene, and there's more to it than pulling everybody out of private offices and putting them into work stations." Russ continued, "There is one thing I've been eager to share with you: We want to make every day a learning experience for each of us because that's the best way to improve. I believe that you really don't learn that much in a private office.
"Another big driver is this: Our business is all about building trust.
