In April 2014, Swinerton Builders San Diego division broke ground on the Gaslamp Courtyard by Marriott Hotel in Downtown San Diego. An estimated $20 million project, work expects to wrap up by the end of the summer.
Located on Sixth Avenue between Island and J, the 50,000-square-foot, 90-unit hotel stands 14 stories tall with one below-grade level for back-of-house operations and minimal parking. The hotel has a European boutique feel to it, with smaller suites and bathrooms than standard Courtyards. An extended-stay hotel, guests will have several different room configurations to choose from.
Offering sweeping views of the ocean and downtown, the Gaslamp Courtyard by Marriott’s upscale rooftop bar and lounge will be a hip, casual place for guests to relax. The open-air bar offers an incredible view into Petco Park, where people can watch the Padres play over good food and drink. The hotel also features a lobby bar and lounge, a home theater and media pods, and is outfitted with many high-end finishes.
The Gaslamp Courtyard by Marriott Hotel will be a welcomed addition to the neighborhood, as the lot sat as a vacant excavation for more than a half-decade. A challenging yet rewarding project, Swinerton Builders dealt with significant site constraints on the tight 50x100-foot lot. Hemmed in on three sides with only 50 feet of street frontage, there was very limited laydown and material storage area. Like a logistical chess match, the Swinerton project team coordinated closely with Marriott, consultants, city officials and neighbors to minimize disruption to all parties. They also timed any lane closures around the Padres schedule to ensure downtown traffic was unaffected.
Swinerton Builders San Diego is proud to bring a top-class hotel to the Gaslamp Quarter, and looks forward to taking part in its grand opening this summer.
