Georgia Griffiths was the only woman in her graduating class with a major in mathematics. She continued to blaze a trail for women in the computer industry by eventually founding in 1989 what became known as G2 Software Systems. Using her experience in serving both government and commercial clients, Griffiths created a leading, innovative software implementation firm with large defense contracts. By rewarding employees for everything they do and keeping overhead low, Griffiths has led the company to double-digit growth over the past three years. G2 now boasts contracts supporting Seaport-e, submarine software for the Navy, defense travel systems and defense alert systems.
Maintaining relationships with key government resources, who lobby important and necessary change in the government’s technology system, has been fundamental for G2. As a result, Griffiths has succeeded in getting innovative software coded and installed quickly in the government to improve communication systems among military leaders, strategists and vessels.
The G2 business model prides itself on low overhead. There is no middle management, which drastically cuts costs to clients. Employees are allowed to work as many hours as they wish, acquiring a larger salary than at a competitor. Every employee, including its CEO and CFO, is paid an hourly rate instead of a yearly salary to motivate them to work overtime to finish large projects. Hourly salaries also give workers more freedom, mobility and flexibility in terms of vacation and childcare. Referral and marketing bonuses are other incentives. Remarkably, G2 is owned solely by its employees.
Griffiths works part-time and uses her free time to encourage women to pursue careers in applied science. She has endowed two Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) scholarships at her alma mater, California State University Long Beach. As an Angel Flight West Mission Command Pilot, she volunteers her time, aircraft and all expenses to ferry passengers needing medical procedures.
“Gee, too,” Griffiths and her company continue to soar. G2 is considered a leading provider of software programming for the government and commands the majority market share in software resources for San Diego government entities.
