As the eldest of 13 siblings, eight of whom work for him, Bill Keith is a born leader. When his father became very ill from skin cancer, 22-year-old Keith convinced his mom to sell the only piece of property they owned. In 2005, he used the money as startup capital for the bootstrapped family business, Perfect Bar. He took the family’s original, nutritional, all-natural Peanut Butter Perfect Bar recipe to another level by creating a line of refrigerated Perfect Bar flavors. Using an unconventional market strategy, he penetrated the crowded market and earned a distribution contract with Whole Foods. Recently, Perfect Bar debuted portion-controlled 100-calorie minis, as well as two new flavors.

Though his college professor had scoffed at his business idea to sell the first refrigerated nutrition bar made with all-natural whole food ingredients, Keith persisted. Perfect Bar churns out gluten-free bars that include whole food supplements, peanut butter and organic honey. Perfect Bar is cold-pressed and handmade in the company’s certified-organic kitchen using a proprietary method without chemical preservatives, artificial ingredients or refined sugars. Because Perfect Bar contains only the freshest ingredients, it’s stored in the refrigerator with a nine-month shelf life.

Keith’s unusual marketing strategy relies heavily on word of mouth, in-store demos and social sharing among clean-eating advocates. Keith is working on expanding brand awareness by securing a special marketing agreement with the San Diego Padres for the 2015 MLB season. He also eyes promising opportunities in food supplements, gourmet nut butters and protein powders.

To honor his father, Keith and Perfect Bar teamed up with the Skin Cancer Foundation to raise awareness for skin cancer prevention, early detection and treatment. They also support the Whole Planet Foundation, The Whole Kids Foundation’s School Garden Grants Program and other community organizations.

There are a lot of hungry customers out there. Perfect Bar has expanded production capacity to manufacture almost 2 million bars every year, and they are now sold at grocery stores nationwide. That’s perfect!
