Fast-track construction safety training program offers opportunity

A unique, accelerated safety certification program is underway at UC San Diego Extension in partnership with the Associated Builders and Contractors of San Diego. The program emphasizes hands-on training, including a guaranteed job internship.

The Safety Specialist Professional Certificate program is an intensive three-month course taught by a team of safety specialists combining UCSD class instruction with hands-on training at the ABC training facility in Poway. The course is designed for individuals who want to quickly immerse themselves in learning the skills needed to administer safety requirements in the building industry, including Occupational Health and Safety protocols for air quality, rigging, and fall protection. It is especially geared for military veterans who may already have exposure to safety procedures as part of their military training.

Participants complete a three-week internship as part of earning an entry-level certificate to bolster their resumes.

“It will give students a taste of the on-the-job experience and expose their skills to national companies who are looking to hire,” said lead instructor Bob Harrell, ABC San Diego safety committee member and safety consultant. All internships are paid, which can lead to part-time or full-time employment in certain cases.

One week of the course is devoted to leadership education.

“Partnering so closely with ABC San Diego insures that we tailor the instruction to the needs of employers, who report that leadership and communication with workers and upper management are among the most valuable skills on the job,” Harrell said.

Students and the professionals from UCSD and ABC San Diego are encouraged to build a learning community outside the classroom to facilitate tutoring, help with resume writing and networking for referrals to job opportunities.
