Did you know that college costs are advancing faster than the rate of inflation? According to the College Board, tuition and fees for the 2002-03 school year increased an average of 7.7 percent at four-year public colleges. To help compensate for the substantial cost of obtaining a college degree, UCSD Athena launched a new initiative this year associated with the annual Pinnacle Awards Program that will substantially increase the amount of funds available for the Athena Scholarship Program. The scholarships are awarded to several remarkable young women in San Diego who will be embarking on studies in the areas of science, engineering or mathematics. Our goal is to raise $50,000 to help support these next generation Athena members. This goal is achievable -- but only with the help of all Athena members and their associates. The strategy for reaching the goal is to have each Athena member contribute $100 or more and become a member of the Century Club. The next step is for each Athena member to ask five of her or his executive colleagues to donate $100 or more. We also encourage members to seek matching donations from their companies. A pin has been designed for contributors to the Century Club. Not only is the pin beautiful, but by wearing it on the golf course, at your next power lunch or next cocktail event, it will help spread the word about the Athena Century Club and our goal for the Pinnacle Scholarship Fund. Donations can be made online at http://athena.ucsd.edu/PinnacleScholarship.htm, or via mail to: Athena Scholarship Fund UCSD ATHENA 9500 Gilman Dr. Mail Code 0170X La Jolla, CA 92093-0170X

Special thanks to our Century Club members for their donation to the Pinnacle Awards Scholarship Fund. So far, more than 100 individuals and corporations have supported these incredible young women.
