Founded in Baltimore, Md., in 1950 to represent the interests and concerns of merit shop contractors, ABC is a national organization with more than 24,000 members in over 80 chapters throughout the United States. Firms that operate under the "merit shop" principle strive to ensure that performance is based on ability rather than union or non-union affiliation. The ABC philosophy maintains that the lowest responsible bidder should be awarded the project, regardless of labor affiliation. ABC is the only construction organization in the country devoted exclusively to merit shop construction. And it is one of the few associations within the industry that treats the entire construction team -- general contractors, specialty contractors, suppliers, design professionals and associates -- as equal partners.
National offices Located in Washington, D.C., National ABC is one of the top lobbying organizations in the country. The ABC logo carries considerable clout with administration officials and federal government leaders on Capitol Hill. National ABC advises our federal government on scores of issues affecting the construction industry. With specialists in government relations, business development, communications, education, safety, finance, fringe benefits, membership, political education and more, National ABC is recognized as the leader of and the voice for free enterprise in construction.
San Diego chapter Associated Builders & Contractors of San Diego Inc., a California nonprofit organization, was chartered in September 1976 and is governed by a board of directors representing all segments of the membership. All members have an equal vote and the right to hold a seat on the board after a formal nomination and vote process. The Apprenticeship Training Trust is governed by a board of trustees. Trustees are elected after a formal nomination by the board of directors; thereafter, the trustees maintain overall fiduciary responsibility for the management of the chapter's apprenticeship and craft training programs. Trustees appoint committee members to oversee management of the individual apprenticeship and craft training programs, and each committee nominates and elects its own chairperson. The California Health Trust is governed by a board of trustees, also elected after a formal nomination by the board of directors, and which maintains overall fiduciary responsibility for the management of the chapter's health and welfare benefits programs. The ABC Safety and Legislative/PAC committees are self-appointed and report to the board of directors. Generally, committees, trusts and board of directors meet monthly, or more often if necessary.
