The San Diego Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) recently honored excellence in the commercial real estate industry at the 20th Annual Office Building of the Year (TOBY) Awards.

Recipients of this esteemed award spanned eight building categories and included Carlsbad Pacific Center in the Suburban Office Park -- Low Rise category, managed by Joy C. Cole, RPA, of Prentiss Properties; Nobel Executive Center in the Suburban Office Park -- High Rise category, managed by Barbara Puccio, RPA, FMA, of CB Richard Ellis Inc.; Towne Centre Technology Park IV in the Renovated Building category, managed by Kristine Love of CarrAmerica Realty Corp.; 8010 Frost St. in the Medical Office Building category, managed by Melody Melara of Grubb & Ellis/BRE Commercial; Mammoth Professional Building East in the Under 100,000 Square Feet category, managed by Cheryl McVay of Colliers International; Rio San Diego Plaza in the 100,000-249,999 Square Feet category, managed by Cindy Devlin of Burnham Real Estate Services; 550 Corporate Center in the 250,000-499,999 Square Feet category managed by Mary Blagg, CCIM, CPM, of CB Richard Ellis; and First National Bank Center in the 500,000-999,999 Square Feet category, managed by Glenn Fibiger, RPA, of Landmark Asset Management Group.

The TOBY Award is bestowed as the highest mark of excellence for office building management and is the most all-inclusive program in the commercial real estate industry. All facets of a building's operations are thoroughly evaluated during the judging process by a panel comprising industry professionals.

The criteria under evaluation for the TOBY Awards included tenant relations programs, community involvement, emergency evacuation procedures and continuing education for building personnel.

The recipients of the local TOBY Awards will advance to the regional level of competition. Regional winners then advance to the international level, the final stage of the competition. Winners of the TOBY Awards will be recognized at BOMA International's Annual Convention in Anaheim on June 25-28, 2005.

Three-time TOBY winner Glenn Fibiger, RPA, property manager of First National Bank Center, is one of several local winners who have moved on in previous years to achieve success in BOMA's regional awards program.

"The TOBY competition is a great program, especially at the local level," Fibiger said. "It tells your owner, tenants and peers 'Here's our property and we're proud of it.' From a marketing standpoint, the recognition enhances our ability to showcase both the building and our management company. Regardless of whether you win or lose, it's a positive experience."
