Downtown Chula Vista celebrates fall and winter with fun-filled family events

Chula Vista's 42nd Annual Starlight Parade "Festival of Lights" -- the South Bay's largest night-time holiday parade -- will take place Saturday, Dec. 4, at 5:30 p.m.

The 42nd Annual Starlight Parade will include carolers, marching bands, floats, holiday cheer and a visit from Santa Claus. Thousands of parade participants will merrily march their way along Third Avenue in downtown Chula Vista from H to E Street.

The festivities will begin with a fun-filled free children's event in Memorial Park from 2:30 to 5 p.m. -- featuring live entertainment, pictures with Santa Claus and the annual Chula Vista tree lighting ceremony.

The Chula Vista School Safety Patrol will collect new teddy bear donations for the Children's Hospital along the parade route again this year. The San Diego Regional Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive works each year to comfort the 300,000 children that are treated by San Diego Children's Hospital each year. If you would like to donate a bear, please give it to the School Safety Patrol as they pass. Please wait for them to come to you, as spectators are not permitted on the parade route. Donations can also be delivered to your local law enforcement agency.

The Best Christmas Pageant Ever returns to theatre on Third

In response to the rave reviews and sell-out audiences at last year's debut, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" will return to the Junior Theatre this December.

In this hilarious Christmas tale, a couple struggling to put on a church Christmas pageant are faced with casting the Herdman kids, "the worst kids in the whole history of the world."

You won't believe the mayhem -- and the fun -- when the Herdmans collide head on with the Christmas story! The production is recommended for all ages, and will run Dec. 10 through Dec. 19 in downtown Chula Vista's Junior Theatre on Third and Davidson.

Show times are 2 and 4 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are on sale for $5 for children under age 14 and $10 for adults.

For information on purchasing tickets, contact the Junior Theatre box office at (619) 239-8355.

The Downtown Chula Vista Certified Farmers' Market, located on Center Street off Third Avenue, is open from 3 to 6 p.m. every Thursday. Autumn and winter months yield a wide array of delicious fruits and vegetables, including grapefruit, pomegranates, pomelos, tangerines, and much more. With an incredible variety of the freshest produce (often picked the day of the market), the market draws a crowd every week.

Shoppers also value the specialty cuisine available at the downtown market, including over 12 types of hummus, more than 25 types of nuts, gourmet empanadas and tamales, fresh baked bakery items, olives and olive oil, and many organic options.

The food court offers delicious and unique fare, including kettle corn, kabobs, French crepes, tacos, churros and gyros.

The Downtown Chula Vista Farmers' Market also features an array of handcrafted items and a frequent shopper program. Don't miss the sights and sounds of the holidays this winter season at the market, with special appearances from caroling ensembles and beautiful holiday bouquets, wreaths and decor.
