Message from the Dean

Perhaps the most important chapter in any history of the University of San Diego School of Law's first 50 years would be the one about our students and graduates, because what essentially stands out about the law school are their achievements.

Beyond the pomp and circumstance that accompany anniversary celebrations such as ours, the main commemoration is the quiet, continuing good works of our students and graduates. They honor us with their accomplishments.

Today, more than 11,000 University of San Diego law alumni are making an impact throughout the United States and the world. The law school has played a major role in shaping the San Diego legal community, and we are particularly proud that a large percentage of all attorneys in San Diego County are USD graduates.

Our alumni are leaders -- among them are federal and state judges; distinguished attorneys in private practice and the public sector; government officials; public interest activists; and corporate executives.

And even while they are in law school, our future alumni are also making a significant contribution to the San Diego community.

As this special supplement to The Daily Transcript demonstrates, our Legal Clinics provide USD law students with hands-on opportunities to learn lawyering skills while rendering valuable service to the community by providing counseling and representation to persons who could not otherwise afford such legal services.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating the University of San Diego School of Law's 50th anniversary. I hope you will read on and learn more about some of our most distinguished alumni, outstanding programs and upcoming special events.
