Where expectations become reality

Related Special Reports

"Treat others as you would like to be treated" was the mission statement of Jack Good and Stan Roberts, founders of Good & Roberts, Inc. General Contractors, in 1979, and remains the focal point 25 years later.

Much has changed in the commercial building industry over the past 25 years. Sustained low interest rates, the proliferation of next generation building materials and technologies, mergers and industry consolidation, and a fragile sense of security are just a few of the sweeping changes that have molded the industry into what it is today.

Vista-based Good & Roberts General Contracting has thrived amid this shifting landscape, in part due to its dedication to quality and service, but more importantly because the company remains true to that founding philosophy.

Humble beginnings

Along with their wives and two employees, Good and Roberts formed Good & Roberts Inc. in a rented office in Carlsbad.

Today the company is a diverse, multi-million dollar commercial general contracting firm that offers complete in-house construction services for commercial, lab and bio-tech, tenant improvements, industrial and financial institutions. It has long since left its rented location and now occupies its own 14,000-square-foot facility in Vista. The firm's six employees have grown to a staff of nearly 80, many of whom have been with Good & Roberts for 10 years or more.

Building relationships

"More than anything we pride ourselves on our integrity," said President Tim Umbarger. "Our 'open book' approach results in strong and long-lasting relationships with our customers."

Umbarger is one of the original two employees who started with Good & Roberts as a carpenter in 1979.

Known for the excellent relationships it shares with its subcontractors, Good & Roberts recognizes that its success depends on these trusted partnerships.

"We work hard to maintain integrity and professionalism in our business practices," said Chuck Glynn, Good & Roberts' executive vice president, "And it is nice to hear from our peers that we are maintaining high standards within the industry."

That recognition has come in the form of several landmark awards. Good & Roberts has been honored for its safety programs and received the "General Contractor of the Year" award from the American Subcontractors Association Award in 2000, 2001 and 2002. They were also awarded a "Continued Achievement" honor in 2003.

Congratulations to Good & Roberts Inc. for 25 years of excellent service in San Diego and for maintaining their founding philosophy of "treating others as you would like to be treated."
