Over twenty five years ago, as a single mother, Joan Burns entered the Hospitality world as a waitress at a hotel in a small Michigan town. That path lead to a career in the Hospitality industry, with Joan experiencing all aspects of the business. Joan gained first hand knowledge in all operational functions of the Hotels she worked in as well as Executive Management. She was recruited to assist in the opening of a new resort on the island of St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where she worked side by side with the local employees, learning the culture and used her experience to eventually work in the Tourist Industry that is so much a part of the Caribbean islands.

In 1995 Joan moved to North San Diego County and worked for an international corporation in Carlsbad, using her experience to plan corporate events for the company and attaining the position of Vice President. However, she was intrigued with the women entrepreneurs she met in Southern California and had the dream to strike out on her own as an independent event planner. In 2001 she made the decision to follow that dream and created Sampson & Associates.

Ms. Burns is a member of Meeting Planners International, the International Association of Administrative Professionals, the Women’s Council of Realtors, the San Diego Association of Realtors and serves on committees with the Carlsbad and Oceanside Chambers of Commerce. Joan is also a co-producer of the Annual Women in Business Symposium held every May at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Mission Tower Building. She has worked with the Convention Industry Council in implementing the APEX initiative to standardize practices in the Meetings and Hospitality industry. Sampson & Associates has donated time to area nonprofits and community projects to assist in the planning and onsite management of their events.

Joan teaches a Customer Service Class at California State University San Marcos in conjunction with the Event Planning Certification Program and has addressed Community Colleges, Chambers of Commerce, National Seminars, Professional Associations and Service Clubs regarding effective networking techniques and relationship building as well as motivational talks to women’s organizations on the subject of starting your own business.
