When Maureen Gray founded KBM Building Services as Kleenhouse Maid Service in 1981, she was armed with only a small amount of capital, a briefcase, rented office space, and the services of six housekeepers. Eventually, she sold the maid service, and concentrated solely on providing contract commercial janitorial service, over the years added a specialized floor care division, a construction and tenant improvement division, and KBM Security Services, Inc., a provider of unarmed, uniformed security officers. In 24 years, KBM has grown to be the seventh largest woman-owned businesses in San Diego, with over 450 employees.

Gray has worked hard to “put a great team together,” each team member is expected to have the self-discipline and desire to do the “right thing.” To Gray, KBM’s vision statement, To Be the Service Provider and Employer of Choice, is more than just words. “We really want [to achieve] this-and it’s important for all of us to be aligned toward the same goal and to honor KBM’s values- Partnerships, Empowerment, Operational Excellence, Performance Recognition, Leadership by Example, and Environmental Health. I strive to inspire our entire team to live by these wonderful values.”

A firm Believer in giving back to the community, Gray and KBM team members have participated in Meals on Wheels for over 15 years, and contributed time and money to many other local service organizations, such as I Love a Clean San Diego, Bravo Awards, S.D. Hospice and Salvation Army. Currently, Gray serves on the board of ElderHelp of San Diego, an organization devoted to helping seniors live independently and with dignity and serves on the advisory board of Adventures of the Mind in Washington D.C.

Gray is also actively involved professionally with Renaissance Executive Forum and Building Service Contractors Association International (BSCAI). Gray is proud of the culture she has built. She recently worked with the Beyster Institute to turn the company into an employee-owned company, one of her long-held dreams. Awards earned by KBM include finalist in the Better Business Bureau’s 2003 Torch Awards for ethics in business, and in the 2002 and 2001 Best Companies to Work For in San Diego.
