How does a woman from China become the owner of a medical devices manufacturing company in America? She believes in herself, in her family and in America.
Meet Dr. Naishu Wang, a woman who wears many hats; she is a mother, a mentor, a scientist, a doctor and an entrepreneur. Wang shares the success of her business with her 28-year-old twin daughters, who like their mother, each bears multiple roles in Wang's company Alfa Scientific Designs Inc.; truly a winning combination.
As a citizen of China and a female, Wang's profession was chosen for her. It was determined that she would go to medical school and it's quite fortunate for the international medical community that she did.
She obtained her M.D. in 1970 in China, and practiced medicine for more than 14 years there while continuing to get specialized medical training.
Education is extremely important to Wang, and through an exchange program at Ohio University, she was able to work as a teaching assistant while obtaining her Ph.D. in zoological and biomedical sciences, which she accomplished in 1991.
Following her graduation, Wang was highly recruited and she moved to San Diego. As Wang settled into the San Diego community both personally and professionally, she became involved with the U.S. China Entrepreneurs Association (UCEA) - an organization that works to bridge business activities between the U.S. and China.
She chose to stay in San Diego because of the strong biomedical industry here and for the much-desired Southern California climate.
Alfa Scientific Designs Inc. was founded in 1996 in San Diego. The major objective of Alfa Scientific Designs is to develop high quality and advanced in-vitro rapid medical diagnostic devices (IVDD) for the detection of a variety of diseases.
Alfa Scientific Designs is committed to consistently providing its customers with the highest quality products, professional service, and competitive prices. Products and services are provided to professional hospitals, biotech companies, medical laboratories and over-the-counter (OTC), both domestic and international.
Within eight years, Alfa Scientific Designs has grown from a company of three to over 45 employees and has developed 49 medical diagnostic devices.
To date, Alfa Scientific Designs has submitted 12 patent applications in the United States and some in Europe.
Alfa Scientific Designs has been continuously growing. To accommodate their growing needs for manufacturing, in year 2005, they will move into a 40,000-square-foot facility, which is three times larger then their current one.
Two Small Business Administration loan programs aided Alfa Scientific Designs' growth. Wang was approved for both a 7(a) and a 504 loan to purchase new automated equipment, hire key personnel, double their inventory and purchase a larger facility, to house it all. She is very grateful to the SBA for playing an important roll in the growth of her company.
Wang believes that without SBA's support, her business would not be as successful as it is today.
