SCORE, known as "Counselors to America's Small Businesses," reported recently that it had helped its 7 millionth nationwide client by offering business expertise and training to help small businesses succeed.

SCORE offers in-person and online counseling and workshops through 350 chapters in the United States that help aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners plan for the success of their businesses.

Both startup and existing businesses call on SCORE as a sounding board for information and advice. In fiscal year 2004, SCORE provided nearly half a million total services in face-to-face counseling sessions, online counseling sessions and workshops, while the San Diego chapter served one of the largest totals reported.

SCORE counseling is confidential and offered to entrepreneurs at no charge. Volunteers who offer their business expertise are working and retired small business owners and corporate executives. San Diego also provides 10 workshops and women's monthly breakfasts on a regular basis. There is a small fee to attend these training sessions.

SCORE's more than 10,500 volunteer business counselors and San Diego's 70 counselors, serve their communities by building the economic strength of America -- through the success of local small businesses. The San Diego Website offers "Free Business Stuff," in addition to workshop and women's breakfast program information and registration at www.score-sandiego.org.

SCORE counseling is offered in north San Diego County every Monday at the Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce, and two times monthly at the Vista Chamber of Commerce, by appointment. The Web site also lists counseling locations at other chambers throughout the county, as well as at the SBA office in downtown San Diego.

During the month of May, the women's breakfast at the Windmill on May 20 will feature Susan Lamping of CDC Small Business Finance on "Alternative Financing Sources;" and in Mission Valley on May 27 with Michelle Burkart on "Close More Sales...Get More Clients."

Business Workshops scheduled in May in Mission Valley include "How to Start & Manage Your Own Business," "16 Successful Business Tactics," "How to Develop Your Competitive Advantage," "Financing Your Business," "How to Write a Winning Business Plan," "QuickBooks Basic," "The ABC's of Selling" and "Internet Marketing."

Registration may be processed online at www.score-sandiego.org for both the workshops and women's programs. Experienced business owners and executives wanting to give back to the business community are invited to consider becoming a SCORE volunteer by contacting the SCORE office at (619) 557-7272 for more information.
