Some of San Diego's largest firms have been employing USD paralegals since the early 1980s. Firms such as Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP and DLA Piper Rudnick Gray Cary contact the program office when seeking qualified paralegals. As a free service to both employers and graduates, the University of San Diego Paralegal Program facilitates the connection.
Students in the program participate in workshops on resume writing, interviewing skills and conducting a job search in the legal field.
Upon graduation, they provide resumes to the program office to be mailed to prospective employers. Law firms, corporations, banks and other entities frequently contact the program office when job opportunities arise. Resumes are sent for immediate review.
"As a legal administrator, when I need to hire a paralegal, graduates from USD immediately stand out in my mind," said Don Gressly, of Campbell, Volk & Lauter. "This is certainly true when I review resumes. Education, possessing technical skills and being well trained plays a major factor when considering candidates for a job. First, USD graduates are well trained and, in my experience, once hired (they) immediately contribute to the overall mission. Secondly, they possess a professional attitude and, for whatever reason, demonstrate great people skills."
Surveys indicate over half of USD's graduates find their first job through this process. For information on listing your firm's job opportunities with USD, please contact Jamie DeCoster at (619) 260-4579 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
