Helix Electric Inc. is one of the largest merit shop contractors in the nation. Helix has operating divisions in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay area and Las Vegas, with their headquarters located in San Diego. Founded in 1985, the company currently employs more than 1,200 field employees and continues to expand.

The company specializes in technically complicated "fast track" projects with rigorous completion schedules. These projects require a high degree of skillful supervision and crews that are savvy to time saving methods. They include schools, hospitals, prisons, water treatment facilities, medical centers, airports and libraries.

Helix is especially proud of their design/build division that is second to none in the industry. This division is a leading competitor in the "private" marketplace and has carved a "niche" in the area of "high density" multifamily housing including large condo and apartment complexes, senior assisted living facilities and military housing. The design/build division also builds shopping centers, major shopping malls and a variety of major department stores.

The electrical industry today is constantly changing with new methods and materials being developed and introduced almost daily.

In order to keep pace, Helix is committed to training their work force. To accomplish this goal Helix University was created to increase and enhance the skills of all of their employees. Helix University has a training program called "Train the Trainer" that is delivered to veteran employees who have the desire to pass along the knowledge they have gained from their experience in the trade. This program empowers these individuals with the ability to communicate their knowledge with others using various teaching methods and strategies that are commonly used in post-secondary learning institutions.

Helix University offers a wealth of trade-related classes, such as conduit bending, motor controls, high voltage splicing and terminating, changes to the national electrical code and wire pulling, to name just a few.

Helix is dedicated to promoting from within and has created several programs designed to train craft workers with the knowledge necessary to advance and move into supervisory and management positions within the company. These classes include attitude and motivational techniques, time management and scheduling, understanding construction documentation, resource management, step-up and supervisory training program.

Helix has been a member of Associated Builders and Contractors since 1987 and continues to be heavily involved in local, state and national committees, boards, trusts and councils. Well over 100 Helix electricians are graduates of the ABC Electrical Apprenticeship program as is their director of craft training.

Helix Electric is also a founding contributor to National Center for Construction Education and Research located in Gainesville, Fla. The NCCER is a provider of world-class curriculum designed specifically for the construction industry.

Helix Electric will continue to work with ABC chapters throughout the state to provide quality training for our employees. Through quality training we will ensure that we remain competitive and informed of the changing technologies in the construction industry to achieve continued growth and success.
