Construction completed on National City Library

General contractor Jaynes Corporation has completed construction of the National City Public Library at 1401 National Blvd. Designed by Carrier Johnson, the 49,000-square-foot facility is one of the first projects approved for funding under the State Library Bond Act.

The library is a two-story building with most of the book collection and reading spaces on the ground floor. A 125-person meeting room is at the east end of the building and opens onto an outdoor terrace adjacent to Kimball Park. The second floor is dedicated to computer labs, learning centers, the local history room and spaces for staff and administration.

The architect's team was led by Kevin Krumdieck and Vicki Piazza. Martin Gabney of Douglas Barnhart was the construction manager, and Greg Ny of Construction Administrators Inc. provided contract administration. Stephen Kirkpatrick, director of public works, represented National City. The project team for the general contractor included Daniel Luker as project manager, Terry Rowland as engineer and Jim Grimes as superintendent. Construction was valued at $12 million.
