The majority of the 95-plus brokers at Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial participate in a variety of community organizations, such as Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County, "I Love a Clean San Diego," various YMCAs and Boys and Girls Clubs, and the Monarch School. These organizations all contribute in some way to improving the city of San Diego and/or to help educate youth.
"It's our responsibility as leaders to teach our younger professionals that it is their responsibility to help make San Diego a better place to live and work," said John Frager, president and CEO of Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial. "Community involvement should be ingrained in our local society, such as it is in a city like New York."
Frager himself leads by example, serving on the board of directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters, and on the advisory board for the Torrey Hills YMCA. The fact that so many of his colleagues share his desire to contribute enables Frager to make it part of the company's culture.
"As a company we support our brokers' community involvement through sponsorships, gathering volunteers and taking part in several charitable events," said Lesley Simmons, marketing director at Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial. "The undeniable satisfaction that comes from making a positive impact is contagious - and our people take notice and get involved."
The company stands by this commitment with time and resources, and in several instances, manpower.
Andy Meyers has been spearheading support for Project Mercy for over four years. The real estate community joins Project Mercy in their annual Baja Challenge for a day when volunteers build houses for underprivileged families in Tijuana, Mexico. Each year, Meyers enlists over 60 brokers and staff to help out.
"I found it so rewarding my first year that before the next event, I sent a recruiting e-mail to all the brokers in San Diego urging their participation," Meyers said. "Baja Challenge saw that and recruited me for its board."
In 2004, the company donated $100,000 to the College of Business Administration's Real Estate Program at San Diego State University to help fund a faculty professorship. A new professor was recently hired and will start in January 2006. In addition to the monetary donation, Grubb & Ellis|BRE Commercial will host a rotational internship in which brokers will mentor and work directly with students.
The company's support also extends to the various organizations that help to strengthen the business climate in San Diego, such as Chairman's Roundtable, CONNECT and the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp.'s Prosperity Committee.

Undeniably, being involved in any organization increases your pool of potential clients, but Frager notes that the motivation is more often the organization itself and the desire to work with people you enjoy being around.
"It can be fun," Frager said. "And we're helping youth and education organizations that will serve to strengthen San Diego's future."
