Aerotek finds niche in staffing technology sectors

For commercial, industrial and technical companies in San Diego County who are looking to hire, a growing alternative that can save the company time, is leaving the recruiting and hiring to a staffing agency.

One such staffing agency is Aerotek, whose niche is providing companies with skilled technology staff as well as engineering, aviation and scientific professionals. The company handles the entire recruiting, screening, placement and staffing management process.

"We're the fastest growing staffing company in the county," said Doug Poldrugo, director of business operations for the two county offices and the Temecula office.

The company is a member of Allegis Group, which includes TEKsystems, an IT staffing agency, and Mentor 4 Inc., which provides professional recruiting services. Together the group represents the world's largest privately held staffing company and the third largest staffing agency in the United States, with more than 220 offices.

Poldrugo was previously in the Marines before joining Aerotek, where he has worked for the past nine years; the last five as director of business operations. He attributes the company's growth and ability to compete with other large staffing agency such as ManPower and Adecco to an aggressive and committed sales force and the professionals they assist.

"We're gaining a serious market share on them (other large staffing agencies). Ultimately it's the people that we hire... it's a brutal industry, but we try to help them excel individually," Poldrugo said, adding there are around 150 staffing agencies in the county to compete against.

Poldrugo said last year his offices earned more than $60 million in revenue.

Typically his three offices have 2,200 to 2,300 contract employees, which can fluctuate on any given week from 50 to 150. They supply professionals to more than 300 different businesses in the area including Lockheed Martin, dj Orthopedics, Genetex Inc. and Gideon. The majority of the company's staffing is done on the contract-to-hire method, where the Aerotek candidate works for a business on a contract basis, with the option of being hired by the company on a permanent basis once the contract has expired.

Since the company is privately held it rarely advertises and has received no recent awards. According to Poldrugo, however, it is being private that makes the company sucessful.

"We're not franchised, so the level of service is entirely different," he said.
