Inspired by the National Credit Union's vision of "People Helping People," Mike Maslak, President and CEO of North Island Credit Union, leads a world-class organization, committed to providing world-class financial services, to fulfill their mission: "Providing People with the means to achieve their Dreams."
Recently, North Island Credit Union has been named among the 25 Best Medium Size Companies to Work for in America by the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM). As a part of the evaluation, a Great Place to Work Trust Index survey was conducted with randomly selected employees to gauge their feelings in five categories: Credibility, Respect, Fairness, Pride and Camaraderie. The credit union earned an overall ranking of 90 percent.
Maslak believes in putting people -- members and employees -- first and "Delivering the Dream" to all stakeholders. North Island Credit Union values every employee as an individual and provides each with a career rather than just a job. The credit union's internal training and education curriculum, also known as Island University, offers unique programs to foster employee development necessary for the accomplishment of strategic business goals. Recognizing and rewarding results is an integral part of "The Island" culture.
Additionally, North Island Credit Union offers employees a wide range of benefits that contribute to their personal, as well as their family's quality of life. This employee-focused culture allows the credit union to attract and retain the best talent in San Diego."
In March 2005, the California Council for Excellence (CCE) awarded North Island Credit Union the Governor's Award for Performance Excellence. This award is reserved for top award winners (The Best of the Best) that consistently demonstrate superior results and Organizational Excellence in accordance with the National Malcolm Baldrige criteria.
Maslak has been with North Island Credit Union since 1987, and in that time he has helped it grow from a $300 million credit union to a $1.5 billion institution. His legacy at North Island is a people-focused culture built upon a sincere belief that employee loyalty plus consumer advocacy equals bottom-line success.
In 1990, Maslak was recognized as one of the Top 100 Business Leaders in California, and in 2005 was named the national Credit Union Executive of the Year by the Credit Union Executives Society.
Maslak has served as a board member on the Chula Vista Chamber of Commerce, the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Chula Vista Veteran's Home. He is the new chair of the California Council for Excellence. In 2005, Maslak was awarded the Boys and Girls Club Golden Achievement Award for service to the community.
Maslak has held numerous roles in the credit union system, including California Credit Union League (CCUL) Board of Directors, Credit Union National Association National Director, and member of the Government Relations Committees for both the CCUL and National Association of Federal Credit Unions. In November 2005, Maslak was honored as the Credit Union Executives Society's Executive of the Year.
