AMN Healthcare Inc. is the largest temporary health care staffing company in the United States. AMN Healthcare's combined nursing, physician, pharmacist and allied health network provides a total staffing solution for acute-care hospitals, physician practice groups and other health care facilities throughout California and the nation.
As an employer of over 2,000 corporate team members and approximately 8,000 quality health care professionals on assignment every week, AMN helps health care facilities meet their patient care goals by providing immediate access to the largest network of quality health care professionals from around the world. We strive to provide unique and fulfilling career opportunities to help our health care professionals achieve their individual personal and professional goals.
AMN Healthcare partners with health care clients to create flexible, customized solutions that meet the facility's financial, clinical and operational goals. AMN's consultative approach delivers the most effective mix of short- and long-term assignment lengths to accommodate census spikes and staffing shortfalls, and also fill staff vacancies through permanent placement. Recruiting both nationally and internationally, AMN is the staffing solution for more than 2,000 different health care facility clients throughout all 50 states, including all of the nation's top-ranked hospitals. AMN Healthcare has received the Gold Seal of Approval for Certification from The Joint Commission for the Health Care Staffing Services program.
In May, the company expanded its service offerings through the acquisition of Rx Pro Health Inc. and Pharmacy Choice Inc. (Rx Pro Health), leading providers of pharmacy staffing, work force technology solutions, and online educational services for hospital-based and retail pharmacies and pharmaceutical companies.
"Rx Pro Health is an innovator and leader in the pharmacy staffing industry and its addition to the AMN organization fits perfectly into our strategy of continuing to offer the most comprehensive clinical staffing solutions to our clients," said Susan Nowakowski, president and CEO of AMN Healthcare.
As the staffing industry authority, backed by over 20 years of experience, AMN Healthcare champions efforts to create and support a work force capable of meeting the current and future needs of patients and health care organizations.
Facilities throughout California and across the nation are struggling with a well-documented shortage of health care professionals, which is expected to worsen in the coming years. Based on a recent projection, the United States could face a deficit of close to 1 million nurses by the year 2020. In California, where nurse-to-patient staffing ratio requirements are in effect, it was reported that more than half of the hospitals inspected for alleged violations did not comply, and that 85 percent could not comply, simply because there are not enough nurses, according to California Health Line.
To address the shortage of health care professionals, AMN supports the Council on Physician and Nurse Supply. The council is an independent, multidisciplinary group dedicated to studying trends in nurse and physician supply and demand. Composed of leaders in health policy from academic institutions and health care organizations nationwide, the council's purpose is to identify educational, demographic, clinical, technological, cultural and other factors that affect the supply and demand of physicians and nurses in the work force. The council will act as an advocate for change, suggesting ways in which supply of physicians and nurses could be adjusted to meet projected demand.
AMN Healthcare also recognizes the importance of attracting a new generation of clinical professionals and faculty into the medical profession to help meet staffing demands. Through scholarships and a tuition reimbursement program, AMN supports nurses in pursuit of advanced degrees. And through AMN's award-winning online continuing education Web site, RN.com, the organization provides nationally accredited courses, helping ensure that nurses are well equipped with the knowledge needed to provide the best patient care possible.
Headquartered in Carmel Valley since 1987, AMN and its executives have received several awards recognizing the organization's innovative employee development programs and advancement opportunities, including UCSD Athena's 2007 Pinnacle Award in the "Corporate/Organization/Institute" category. The award honors an organization whose efforts have furthered the development and promotion of skilled and talented women and which has made a substantial impact within the San Diego technology, life science and health care sector. AMN Healthcare was also recently recognized as one of California's top employers for women in leadership positions by the UC Davis Center for Women and Leadership and is a past recipient of the San Diego Society for Human Development Workplace Excellence Award.
