Mitchell General Contractors has recently completed work on the EXY restaurant and lounge in the Gaslamp Quarter.

The 7,000-square-foot establishment is the vision of George Katakalidis, founder of Daphne's Greek Café restaurant chain. The architect was Mark Swenson ofStudio C. Overseeing the construction was project manager Paul Callison for Mitchell General Contractors.

Construction began in summer and was able to be complete in a relatively short amount of time for various reasons. One being Mitchell have previous built other Daphne's eateries and know what to expect and don't run into many delays. This can also be said for Studio C. They have designed other Daphne's and are familiar with the vision of Katakalidis.

EXY -- named for the Greek word six -- is a "chic, sophisticated informal Greek restaurant and lounge," according to spokesperson David Mendiola. The restaurant will feature Greek cuisine, premium cocktails and an extensive wine collection.

"The idea of 'chic Greek' was an appealing one for several reasons," said Katakalidis in a statement. "It allowed us to continue to cater to fans of Greek food while offering an upscale and social environment with an ultra appealing 'loungy' interior. Guest can expect premium Greek Cuisine, a magnificent bar and wine cellar and private party rooms, which creates a fun, hip, informal atmosphere."

The Sixth Avenue location places EXY at the center of the Gaslamp District, where Katakalidis said chic Greek will fit in perfectly. The interior of the restaurant and lounge has a "Euro-Asian design with a Greek Feel" to it, according to Mendiola.

"We wanted to make it a universal setting with a family atmosphere and a social element," Mendiola added.

EXY will also serve as the debut of Chef Carter Shuffler to San Diego. He is known for his innovative style and diverse culinary experiences. The menu will feature items like grilled octopus and Moussaka ravioli filled with a roasted lamb.

"The culinary menu for EXY will be unlike anything San Diegans have experienced," said Chef Shuffler in a statement. "The exquisite flavors, vibrant colors and first-rate presentation will exceed the expectations of even the most discriminating gourmand."

Katakalidis has 78 Daphne's establishments across three states including: Arizona, California and Colorado.
