The Colliers International San Diego office renovation is among this year's Calibre Award honorees. The design award was created by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA), Southern California Chapter.
"The Calibre recognizes design excellence and consultant teams who have exceeded the expectations of the interior design profession," said Jeff Hollander, senior associate with Gensler, the architect and interior designer for the Colliers project.
In addition to Gensler and Colliers San Diego, design team members included Bycor Construction, the general contractor; Space Matters, the project management company; and property management company Maguire Properties (formerly Equity Office). Calibre winners were honored April 4 at the 20 annual awards event held at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
Rather than relocate, Colliers elected to remain at its La Jolla Village Drive office of more than 20 years and expand from 10,000 square feet on one floor to 22,000 square feet on two floors. Clients now enter the company on the first floor via a grand lobby with 14-foot high glass walls, dramatic, sweeping staircase and water feature.
"Colliers took over an awkward ground-floor space characterized by monumental window walls that eventually put their conference room, reception area and staircase on display," Hollander said. "The ground-floor space ultimately allowed Colliers to have a retail presence in a high-rise tower and create a lasting first impression for clients."
An eight-phase design and construction process was developed to permit minimal disruption as each broker used swing space in other suites located within the building while individual offices were being renovated one-by-one.
According to Jim Zimsky, senior managing director of Colliers International, "The design team did an outstanding job for us creating an interactive and collaborative environment for both brokers and staff."
Housing about 70 employees, the renovated space includes private offices; an employee lounge featuring a pool table, plasma television and "putting" green; a full kitchen; and the latest video conferencing equipment to communicate with clients and other Colliers regional offices in Carlsbad, Downtown San Diego and Temecula.
