Corporate Directors Forum is honoring six of San Diego's top directors at its annual Director of the Year awards for their leadership and high standards in corporate governance. Honorees were selected for their outstanding performance in the boardroom and behind the scenes.
"Corporate Directors Forum believes better boards make better companies, and this year's honorees have proven essential to their organizations," said Jan Kassebaum-Patterson, Director of the Year chair. "These board members have provided strength, wisdom and exceptional knowledge in service of the companies they represent."
Awards are given in the following categories: corporate governance; enhancement of economic value; companies in transition; corporate citizenship; not-for-profit; and lifetime achievement.
Directors who will be recognized at the event are:
Ronald A. Matricaria, director, Life Technologies, honored as Director of the Year for Corporate Governance. Matricaria was elected to the Life Technologies board in July 2004. As a board member, he has been involved in cutting-edge corporate governance matters, organizational development, director recruitment and the increasingly challenging issues of board and executive compensation. In addition, Matricaria is a member of the board of directors of Hospira Inc. and Volcano Therapeutics Inc., and he is trustee emeritus of the University of Minnesota Foundation.
Andrew (Drew) E. Senyei, M.D., chairman, Genoptix, honored as Director of the Year for Enhancement of Economic Value. Senyei co-founded Genoptix in 1999 and has served as chairman since 2000. He supported the evolution of the company to a new business model that allowed Genoptix to have the most successful initial public offering of 2007. Senyei is currently managing director at Enterprise Partners Venture Capital, has served on the boards of more than 25 private and public companies, is past chair of the UCSD Jacobs School of Engineering Advisory Council and serves on the board of trustees of Northwestern University.
Murray H. Hutchison, director, Jack in the Box, honored as Director of the Year for Companies in Transition. Hutchison has been a director of Jack in the Box since May 1998. He has played an instrumental role in helping Jack in the Box transition from prior leadership to its current CEO. He championed the strategic business model transition from company-owned stores to the current successful franchise model that set a new direction for the company. Hutchison is currently on the board of directors at Teppco Partners LP, Huntington Hotel Corp., Cadiz Inc., The Olson Co., Cardium Therapeutics Inc. and The Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute.
Robert D. Buell, partner, Luce, Forward, Hamilton & Scripps LLP, honored as Director of the Year for Corporate Citizenship. Buell, a partner at Luce Forward since 1992, has been a driving force at the firm in influencing the corporate culture and employees who support the community in a variety of significant ways. He has served on the board of the YMCA of San Diego County for eight years and is starting an unprecedented fourth year as chairman. Buell, whose practice focuses on real estate and construction transactions, served as managing partner at Luce Forward from 1998-2004.
Michael W. Murphy, president and CEO, Sharp HealthCare, honored as Director of the Year for a Not-for-profit Board. Murphy was appointed as president and CEO of Sharp HealthCare in June 1996, and he also serves on the board of directors. When Sharp was going to be merged with a large health care purchasing group, Murphy was able to keep the organization together, and now Sharp is the largest health care provider in San Diego. Under his leadership, Sharp strives to fulfill its vision of becoming the best place to work, practice medicine and receive care. Murphy is past chairman of the San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce and is currently a director at Jack in the Box.
James M. Sweeney, various boards, recognized for Lifetime Achievement in Corporate Governance. Sweeney is a serial entrepreneur and director who has been involved in buying, selling or taking public more than 20 health care product and service companies during the last 40 years. He is acknowledged as the founder of the multibillion-dollar home infusion therapy industry and has been the founder and CEO of eight health care product and service companies. Sweeney is currently the chairman and CEO of PatientSafe Solutions Inc., a patient- and nurse-centered company that provides complete patient safety solutions to hospitals. He has taken three companies public and led a leveraged buyout resulting in a 650 percent return to investors in less than four years.
Corporate Directors Forum was founded in 1991. Its purpose is to help directors be better directors through education and peer networking. CDF's core beliefs are that boards are strategic assets of corporations, education makes better directors, better directors make better boards and better boards make better companies.

Its great to see positive news. The public needs to realise that far more good takes place in corporate board rooms than bad.
