T.B. Penick & Sons: Building San Diego for more than a century

T.B. Penick and Sons Inc. is a construction and general contracting company headquartered in San Diego that employs more than 450 people. Four generations of Penicks have been at the company's helm since it was founded in 1905, and Penick family principles of commitment, accountability, integrity and responsibility permeate every bid, design, plan, contract, worksite and project that the firm undertakes.

Under the leadership of President Tim Penick and CEO Marc Penick, the company has grown from a local firm to an industry leader with a national and international presence. T.B. Penick (TBP) is both a general contractor and a specialty contractor that self-performs structural concrete and innovative concrete systems. In addition, the company has two subsidiaries: Convergent Design Build and Triton Structural Concrete.

Over the past century, TBP has played a major role in the construction of projects that have shaped the landscape of San Diego, including city landmarks such as Sea World, Balboa Park and the San Diego Convention Center, as well as more than 3,000 other recreational, religious, educational, military and civic structures.

T.B. Penick & Sons is committed to providing first-rate service to customers and investing in its people. Penick hires the best in the industry and involves its workers in education, training, accountability and problem solving at all levels of the organization. Many staff are second- and third-generation Penick workers.

Penick is also a leader in sustainable construction and has several in-house LEED Accredited Professionals who assist clients in navigating the green building rating system, the nationally accepted standard for design and construction of high-performance, environmentally sustainable buildings. Two of TBP's design-build projects were the first civic structures in San Diego County to receive LEED certification: the George L. Stevens Senior Center in Encanto and the Northwestern Area Police Station in Carmel Valley.

T.B. Penick designs and builds quality and innovation into structures and infrastructure that sustain business and commerce, enable education, provide health care, support the military and enhance the quality of life for all citizens. A strong proponent of design-build construction methodology, TBP has saved taxpayers and project owners many millions of dollars by reducing budgets and avoiding cost overruns through construction efficiencies and innovative solutions.

Over the last few years the company has received numerous accolades, including a first place award in the National Construction Safety Excellence competition as well as recognition for Innovation in Concrete, Cornerstone Excellence, Outstanding Civil Engineering and the Architectural Concrete Project of the Year. Headquartered in San Diego, the company also has offices in Los Angeles, Ontario, Las Vegas and Ohio.
