Premier spine institute opens in San Diego

Alvarado Hospital is changing the way spine disorders are evaluated and treated in San Diego. The hospital's newly opened Advanced Spine Institute & Minimally Invasive Spine Center has brought together an exceptional team of experienced medical, surgical and rehabilitation spine specialists who meet regularly to evaluate, diagnose and develop treatment plans for individual patients.

As two-thirds of adults over age 45 will experience back pain in their lifetime, this is a timely program that will help Alvarado Hospital continue to expand to meet the needs of San Diegans. The Spine Institute's vision is to be the premier destination spine center in Southern California.

"The multidisciplinary team approach works well and provides the best quality for individuals with spine disorders," said the program's medical director, Kam Raiszadeh.

Programs range from targeted spinal core muscle strengthening for nonsurgical treatment of patients with back problems, to the most advanced surgical procedures available anywhere in the world.

Toward this goal, the Advanced Spine Institute has added three new spine surgeons to enhance the strong team already on the medical staff. Two of the new surgeons are Kam Raiszadeh and Ramin Raiszadeh, two brothers in a family of three orthopedic surgeon siblings. Choll Kim is one of the international leaders in minimally invasive spine surgery. All three physicians joined Alvarado from area hospitals, including Sharp, Scripps and UCSD.

The new physicians join an already world-class cadre of spine surgeons, including John Finkenberg, Sanjay Ghosh, Scott Leary, David Barba, Massoud Soumekh and Tyrone Hardy. The spine panel also includes specialists from anesthesiology, emergency medicine, interventional radiology, neurology, pain management, physiatry, psychiatry, pulmonary medicine and a growing wellness program at Alvarado Hospital.

"This is case management at the highest level," said the program's coordinator, Nancy Erman. "Whether people call looking for a doctor, information or community services, we will find the best resources for them."

In addition to providing inpatient and outpatient services, the Spine Institute offers:

¥ Private patient suites with hotel-like amenities

¥ Specially trained nurses

¥ Centralized point of contact/patient advocate

¥ Inpatient and outpatient programs

¥ Operating rooms with state-of-the-art complex and minimally invasive spine equipment

"To be a world-class spine center, we plan to stay ahead of the curve on the latest treatments available," said Kim, who is also the executive director of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery.
