The South Bay Union School District has appointed seven community members to an Independent Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, which will oversee the expenditure of Proposition X funds.

The $59.4 million school safety and repair bond will fund the modernization of seven of South Bay Union School District’s 12 elementary schools. Projects to be undertaken at the remaining five schools include improving windows, replacing sewers and remodeling bathrooms.

The bond also will fund renovations of VIP Village Preschool, the District’s Education Center, Facilities and Transportation Facility and the Purchasing and Child Nutrition Facility.

The Independent Citizens Bond Oversight Committee will ensure Prop X funds are invested as the voters intended and construction projects are completed wisely and competently. The board will give regular progress reports to the board of trustees and the public.

Appointees include Duane Leach, a veteran school district employee; Casey Broach, a former board member of the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce; Harold Phelps, a school parent and member of the Imperial Beach Design Review Board; Alexis Pena, a Parent Teacher Association representative and U.S. Border Patrol employee. Also appointed were Bob Vasquez, former Planning Director of the City of Imperial Beach; Dee McLean, a former member of the Board of Trustees for the school district; and Jim Doud, member of the Chula Vista Taxpayers Association.

“We are confident this group will work hard to ensure the proper use of bond expenditures and construction quality,” said Carol Parish, superintendent of South Bay Union School District.

The committee’s first meeting will take place June 23. Meeting schedules, agendas and minutes will soon be available at www.buildingprox.com.
