President’s Message - November

Related Special Reports

For all of you who supported and participated in the 2009 Fleet Week activities and the combined SDMAC / Fleet Week breakfast on October 21st, thank you very much. The breakfast had the largest turnout since the inception of SDMAC — a tribute to the individuals who planned the event and to your interest in hearing what the Secretary of the Navy, The Honorable Ray Mabus, had to say about the future of the Navy and its involvement in San Diego. Your participation reflects the strong support the military receives from the community.

Since the last SDMAC Quarterly News Update for Members in September, the following important legislative action has occurred:

* Interstate Compact on Educational Opportunities for Military Children (AB34) — This bill was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger in October 2009 and will provide for the uniform treatment at the state and local district levels, of military children transferring between school districts and states. AB343 had strong support from the military and SDMAC.

* Tidelands and Submerged Lands (AB694) — This bill would shift authority over a portion of land from the City of San Diego to the State Lands Commission, effectively removing the ability of the city to cooperate with the U.S. government in the protection and public use of these tidelands and submerged lands. SDMAC had opposed this bill, and it was vetoed by the Governor in October 2009.

* Sales and Use Taxes (SB 765) — This bill would provide an exemption from the sales and use tax for sales made by thrift stores operated in partnership with the Navy and Marine Corps. SDMAC had supported this bill, and it was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger in October 2009.

Thank you to everyone who worked on supporting/defeating these legislative bills.

Welcome to all of our new individual and corporate members. Remember to consider SDMAC in your 2010 budgeting process as we are planning for another very active year. Thank you for all of your support in 2009!
