Students to enjoy new lounge, studying, dining areas at USD

The University of San Diego's new $30.4 million Student Life Pavilion is scheduled to be open at the beginning of the 2009 fall semester, offering students open space for dining and studying, as well as a student radio station, multicultural station, even a grocery market.

The 55,000-square-foot facility is designed to be the first LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified building on the USD campus, and is to designed to provide a distinctive gathering space for all students to find a sense of community.

Connected to the existing Hahn University Center, the four-story, Spanish Renaissance-style pavilion features a tower designed to echo the bell tower of The Immaculata. The pavilion will provide a range of venues for dining, relaxing and studying.

The architect is Kevin Hom + Andrew Goldman Architects of New York and San Diego-based Architects Mosher Drew Watson Ferguson. The general contractor is Rudolph and Sletten.

According to the school, the pavilion will offer study spaces, lounges, programming venues and meeting rooms, featuring video/messaging monitors throughout the building. Meeting rooms will have smart technology and videoconferencing options, including "Tidebreak" team spot areas, where team members can work together across common screens and their own laptops.

The building also will have centralized AMX IT control to monitor energy use.

In addition, the pavilion will include a student radio station, and open spaces are planned for the Multicultural Center, the Women's Center and the Honors Center. New spaces will be designated for a Graduate Law Lounge as well as an International Student Lounge. The Student Leadership and Involvement Center will spotlight inter-organizational cooperation.

Students also will have "Tu Mercado," a complete market with a full grocery line including fresh produce, frozen foods and a tea and coffee bar. New food choices will be available in the new dining areas, which will include numerous themed mini-restaurants.
