HD Supply Facilities Maintenance takes three-pronged approach to wellness

HD Supply Facilities Maintenance is a leading supplier of maintenance, repair and operations products to owners and managers of multifamily, hospitality, educational and commercial properties; health care providers; and municipal and government facilities. The company has a comprehensive wellness program with a wealth of health and welfare benefits. HD Supply understands that associates need more -- from recognition to volunteerism and sustainable operating practices.

As part of the company's "Be Healthy" approach to wellness, it offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to keep associates healthy and give them the protection they need. Not just about comprehensive medical coverage, the benefits are also about options and opportunities that let associates take charge of their own health and well being. Through free preventive care, smoking cessation and online as well as onsite weight management programs, online medical records and more, HD Supply associates have many tools at their fingertips to help them get healthy and stay healthy.

"Our goal is for our associates to be able to build their best life," said Mara Strandlund, vice president of human resources. "It all starts when they conduct their own online health assessment. From there, we provide them with the tools and resources they need to make decisions that are right for them."

HD Supply Facilities Maintenance was recently named a Start! Fit-friendly company by the American Heart Association, one of just five San Diego companies to earn the distinction. The Start! Fit designation recognizes companies that create a culture of physical activity and health in the workplace.

This culture is on display every day at the firm's San Diego headquarters. Associates enjoy the use of an on-site gym, basketball and volleyball courts, and a walking/running trail that that circles the property and extends into an adjacent canyon. A number of associates recently participated in a series of onsite fitness classes, led by a certified fitness instructor. The classes, customized to the fitness level of each participant, were offered both at lunchtime and after hours, affording associates with the opportunity to join a class that fit their schedule. Associates also have the opportunity to participate in free lunch-and-learn informational sessions held throughout the year, as well the opportunity to have a personalized consultation with a nutritionist.

In the company's distribution centers across the country, all associates with physically demanding jobs participate in daily stretching exercises. Visitors to HD Supply's distribution centers may notice associates playing a game of ping-pong during breaks, or a fast-paced game of basketball in a reserved part of the parking lot.

"There is a growing trend of fitness across our network where associates are overheard sharing personal accomplishments and offering encouragement to others. Stories range from the individual that started riding their bike on the weekend in order to shed a few pounds to the die-hard runners that have finished marathons, half-marathons and triathlons for the first time," said David Wilson, vice president of operations.

Healthy associates also lead happier and more productive lives, inside and outside of work. Another part of the wellness program is the "Be Involved" philosophy, which associates have embraced through activities sponsored by our associate-managed ACT ("A Community Team") team, helping each other in times of need via HD Supply's internal Helping Hand Fund, or as part of the firm's Days of Caring events, in which over 200 associates in 15 different cities in the past two months have partnered with a local community agency to give back for a day.

Wellness also extends into the environment, and HD Supply has a companywide sustainability program that supports a commitment to environmental protection by incorporating green practices into daily operations and by helping customers select eco-preferable products. As part of the company's "Be Green" program, it encourages carpooling, focuses on energy efficient lighting and provides reusable coffee mugs made from recyclable materials to every associate.

"We value our associates, and encouraging them to Be Healthy, Be Involved and Be Green is good for them as individuals, good for our communities in which we live and work, and ultimately, good for our company as well," Strandlund said.
