As part of the events of National Manufacturing Day, the Tijuana EDC hosted the Near-Shore Contract Manufacturing Industrial Tour right after the MFG Day Breakfast & Conference organized by the San Diego Regional EDC.
The purpose of the tour was to illustrate in a single day's trip the dynamics of nearsourcing by visiting two manufacturing facilities: Sigmatron International Inc., an international EMS company headquartered in Illinois, and Japanese contract manufacturer SMK. Both have operations located in Tijuana working under IMMEX, better known as the maquiladora program.
Sigmatron and SMK provided presentations with several topics such as corporate structure, general logistics to improve time to market, operation systems and engineering processes such as lean manufacturing and six sigma practices, followed by a walk-through of their production floor showing the manufacturing cells that highlight flexibility and high integration capabilities for high-mix, low-volume manufacturing.
Besides exploring Tijuana's industrial side, the tour also exposed a delicious experience by stopping to taste some of the city's new fashion of urban food in a pleasant open-air environment.
If you missed this tour and if you are interested in learning about nearsource manufacturing, the Tijuana EDC has another trip linked to an upcoming event on Oct. 30 called "North America Competitiveness & Innovation Conference 2013," focusing on cross-border economic development and job creation opportunities.
