Dynalectric division continues growth with pharmaceutical, power, cogeneration projects

Dynalectric Company San Diego, a leading provider of complex, fully integrated design-build electrical services, continues to grow its Industrial and Automation Division by providing process control systems, instrumentation, electrical and balance of plant services to the leading renewable energy, power generation, central utilities plant and pharmaceutical/biotech industries throughout California.

Project Executive Ted Donald, who heads the division, said his group recently was retained to provide the electrical systems installation, startup and commissioning services for the Riverside Energy Resource Center. The project includes the installation of two additional GE LM6000 units to double the exiting 96MW power generating capacity, which is owned by the city of Riverside’s Public Utilities Department. The project is expected to be completed in October.

In addition, Dynalectric takes on a fast track project to provide the electrical and controls installation, startup and commissioning for the Oxnard EF 49MW combined cycle project, which includes the removal of an existing GE LM 5000 turbine and the installation of a new GE LM6000 gas turbine. The project, which also includes startup and commissioning, mirrors a project recently completed by Dynalectric at North Island Naval Station in San Diego. The EF Oxnard facility is a 49MW combined cycle project that serves the headquarters and principal refrigerated processing operations for Boskovich Farms, an integrated vegetable and fruit grower, processor, packager and refrigerated/frozen foods storage company.

Donald said Dynalectric’s Industrial and Automation Division has successfully completed the following projects in the central utility plant and power generation industries: A 100MW peaker plant in Niland, Calif., for the Imperial Irrigation District; Palomar Inlet Air Chiller Addition; a restoration of fire damage to the electrical systems and plant controls of an 18MW biomass power plant at Imperial Valley Resource and Recovery; and cogeneration plants for Qualcomm, University of California San Diego, San Diego Gas & Electric’s South Bay facility; the design, build and commission, and balance of plant control system for the New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, N.Y.; and the design, installation and commissioning of the control panels and instrumentation for the VA Hospital in San Diego.

Dynalectric’s Industrial and Automation Division is comprised of a core staff of 27 that includes electricians, control systems engineers and project managers.

The division started concurrently with the power generation and the pharmaceutical projects, with UCSD Cogeneration Facility and Biogen Idec’s (Nasdaq: BIIB) NIMO plant (eventually sold to Genentech, NYSE: DNA). He said the division soon established itself as a major service provider for instrumentation and control services for Genentec’s OCN Facility in Oceanside, totaling more than 1 million square feet of office, manufacturing and operations, as well as Genentec’s Cell Culture Plant 2 in Vacaville, Calif., a 450,000-square-foot expansion that added a new manufacturing facility and building. The company also provided I & C services for the Biogen/IDEC’s Nobel WFI System facility in La Jolla and its Clinical Operations (NICO) production facility in Oceanside; Pfizer’s Hydrogeneration project, including seven buildings on its La Jolla campus; and the Abbott Vascular Central Plant in Temecula, Calif.
