The National City Chamber of Commerce is hosting this year’s Bayfront Business Expo today at 11 a.m. at 740 Marina Drive. The Expo is an opportunity for business owners and the general public to network and gain valuable resources regarding economic opportunities within National City, throughout San Diego County and California. The chamber makes the Expo available to the public free of charge, and provides live entertainment on the patio of Buster’s Beach House.
This year’s Bayfront Business Expo program will be led by Ruben Garcia, director of the Small Business Administration in San Diego. Ron Morrison, mayor of National City, will provide information on local economic opportunities for National City and the San Diego Region. Amy Dunn, a senior associate and legal consultant for Mercer Co., will present information on health care for small businesses. Dunn is a contributing author to the Compliance Quarterly, a legal communiqué for Mercer.
The county of San Diego will be on hand to speak about affordable health care for the public sector. Susan Lamping, a senior community loan officer from the Small Business Administration, will provide information and resources for small business loans. Bryan Enarson, vice president of development for the San Diego Regional Airport Authority, will give a presentation on the Green Airport Initiative. And to close the program, John Walker, chief solutions officer and co-founder of Talent Evolution, will provide information on small businesses “going green.”
This year’s Bayfront Expo will feature hour-long tours of the 10th Avenue Terminal, located on the west side of the city. The impressive 96-acre terminal, owned and operated by the Port of San Diego, is one of only two active terminals on the West Coast designated to ship and receive military cargo. The terminal’s biggest import, bananas, is just one group of fruits, vegetables and other refrigerated items managed.
The west side, historically known as Old Town, is an area bounded on the west by Interstate 5 and the east by Roosevelt Avenue. Many of the area businesses are members of the National City Chamber of Commerce, committed to servicing the National City community as well as the South Bay area. These businesses, both large and small, contribute to the city’s economic development and actively participate in community events.
One of the chamber’s most prominent members, Knight and Carver, was originally a shipbuilding company. After repositioning due to overseas competition, the company currently retrofits and repairs some of the world’s most high-profile yachts, military vessels and commercial ships. Most notably, Knight and Carver was awarded “Best Refit/Reconfiguration 2009” and continues to service some of the most prestigious yacht owners.
Knight & Carver most recently added a new certified wind division that specializes in wind blade repair and production. K&C has also developed a blade specifically made for low-wind speed sites, which increases the output of electricity during low wind. Founded in 1971, the family-owned and operated business has also been honored by Inc Magazine and Harvard Business School as one of the nation’s top inner-city businesses.
Another prominent member of the chamber is Pasha Automotive, a vehicle processing company servicing dealerships throughout North America. It has been recognized as an industry leader in groundbreaking vehicle handling and processing methods. Since 1960, Pasha has been committed to customer satisfaction, innovation and vehicle shipment efficiency. Its signature inventory control system, On Track Automotive (OTA), combines the latest bar code technology with real-time handheld computers for superior process management.
The Ramos & Associates law practice, also a chamber member, is a full-service law firm with more than 40 years of criminal expertise with a full Spanish Speaking staff. The attorneys defend DUI, DWI and drunk driving, DMV hearing license suspension, domestic violence and restraining order violations, and much more.
San Diego Pretzel Co., a member of the chamber established in 1994, has serviced the San Diego region for 14 years. The owner, a self-proclaimed “pretzologist” and former executive chef to the rich and famous, is committed to making the world’s freshest and most delicious pretzels. San Diego Pretzel Co. has a wholesale program that includes free signage, custom packaging, along with co-packing using one’s own label. In addition to offering their pretzels online, the catering division offers a variety of soft pretzels and Jumbo Hebrew National Pretzel Dogs.
