Award-winning actor Richard Dreyfuss and his wife Svetlana purchased a 4,830-square-foot home on 1.2 acres in Encinitas more than three years ago, knowing it would require a major overhaul. After an intensive planning period and search for the right general contractor, they are now through the framing stages of the renovations and are anxious to start selecting their finishes for this custom estate.
The existing home has been completely gutted to incorporate state-of-the-art technology and increased energy efficiency, such as computer-monitored solar panels. The solar system will virtually eliminate an electric bill from SDG&E.
Dreyfuss and his wife were insistent about reducing their carbon footprint as much as possible. "We had two goals in mind when we purchased this house: To get off the grid as soon as possible, and to make the home the home we wanted it to be," Dreyfuss said in a recent interview.
The remodel will create a unique, single-level four bedroom, four and a half bath home, which will include an office as well as a separate library. The library will house Dreyfuss' 20,000 volume book collection.
"The renovation is customer specific and very unique compared to the typical custom home you might find in North County," said Jeff Daley, principal of J.R. Daley Construction. "We are utilizing the latest materials and technology to accommodate Mr. Dreyfuss' desires in this remodel. For example, a custom therapeutic hydro massage system will be installed in both the master shower and Jacuzzi, which can accommodate 30 people should the need arise. We are also implementing a phone system that will have Shakespearian monologues as the ring tone that is run on a digital loop system, which can be heard throughout the house."
"The job is both challenging and fun," said Lance Audette, general contractor and project manager for J.R. Daley Construction. "Any time you have a client with the name recognition of Richard Dreyfuss and his visionary outside-of-the-box desires, it makes for a challenging day for me and my subcontractors. We are defying conventional building methods in several areas within the home. We look forward to delivering to Mr. Dreyfuss everything he asked for, plus that extra flare that will put a smile on his face when he and his wife move into this unique estate in September."
J.R. Daley Construction is the general contractor for the project, designed by EHM Architects.
J.R. Daley's project team included Daley, principal, and Audette, project manager.
