Physicians Medical Center of San Diego has won “The Outstanding Building of the Year” (TOBY) in the Medical Office category for the Pacific Southwest Region presented by the Building Owners & Managers Association (BOMA). The TOBY Awards are the most prestigious and comprehensive of their kind in the commercial real estate industry, recognizing quality in office buildings and rewarding excellence in office building management.
“TOBY has drawn attention to hundreds of office buildings across the United States and Canada, and to the owners, managers and architects who conceive, operate and design them,” said BOMA San Diego President Barbara Puccio, RPA, FMA, of CB Richard Ellis. “We are very proud to have one of San Diego’s buildings win the prestigious regional award in the Medical Office category. The personal achievement and accolades on a professional level in being involved with a winning building are unmatched.”
Physicians Medical Center, developed and managed by Cambridge and owned by Rady Children’s Hospital-San Diego, includes two medical buildings comprising 176,435 square feet along with a seven-level parking structure. The award-winning building is situated at 7910 Frost Street, one of the most visible corners in Kearny Mesa, across from the Rady Children’s and Sharp Memorial campuses. Tuesday’s win is the second TOBY honor for the property, which won the local San Diego County chapter award in November 2010.
The buildings are home to a multitude of medical specialties and complementary services including pediatric services, genetics, infectious disease, endocrinology, nephrology, orthopedics, physical therapy, pain management, family medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, cardiology and vascular surgery, oral/reconstructive surgery, prosthodontics, a retail pharmacy, imaging and MRI centers and two full-service labs. Hospital-related tenancies include UCSD Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, Sharp and Children’s MRI, Sharp Kidney and Transplant Center and Sharp Chest Medicine and Critical Care Research Center.
Since opening in 2006, Physicians Medical Center has revitalized the central suburban medical office market, attracting leading physicians associated with 43 private medical groups. Approximately 50 percent of the building’s practices feature physicians who have been honored in the prestigious annual ranking of “San Diego’s Top Doctors” by The San Diego Medical Society.
Judging by TOBY officials included review of policies and procedures, preventive maintenance, building quality and condition, renovations, tenants, amenities, staff, training, energy conservation, community involvement and emergency preparedness. Physicians Medical Center will now advance to the international TOBY competition. Winners will be announced at the BOMA conference in Washington, D.C. in June.
