The Second Program of St. Bartholomew’s Concert Series: Handel's 'Messiah'

Related Special Reports

Handel’s great oratorio “Messiah” will be performed at 4:00 p.m., Dec. 4 at St. Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church. The Coventry Choir, a 50-voice ensemble, will sing the first section of the oratorio including the famous “Hallelujah Chorus.” The choir, plus soloists, will be accompanied by the church’s Camerata Strings and other orchestral instruments. The soloists include soprano Diana Villwock, tenor Sean McCormac and mezzo soprano Evangelina Woo.

Born in Giessen, Germany, Diana Villwock moved to San Diego when she was 8 years old. While studying for her B.S. in biochemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles, she sang in the UCLA Choral and the UCLA Chamber Singers. Diana continued her education in Germany where she had the opportunity to sing in the touring Europa Chor as the soprano section leader. Since her return to San Diego, Diana is pursuing not only her Ph.D. in biomaterials and engineering at University of California, San Diego, but continuing her vocal training with Dr. Eichorn to broaden her oratorio and classical repertoire.

Evangelina Woo is from Faribault, Minnesota and graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2005 with a psychology major and a music minor. Originally a piano student, she "found" her voice in college and sang with the Notre Dame Opera, Chorale and the South Bend Symphony. Evangelina graduated from University of San Diego law school in June 2008. She is currently a member of the San Diego Master Chorale.

Sean McCormac is a native North County San Diegan, calling Fallbrook his home. He majored in classical guitar and voice at Palomar College and furthered his studies in voice at California State University at Northridge where he was cast in five operatic roles. After a year-long break from singing, he is currently studying with Dr. Eichorn.

There will be a gala reception following the performance in the church parish hall with various finger foods and festive mulled wine. There is a request of a $10 donation at the door.

Dr. William Eichorn, minister of music and the arts for 28 years, will conduct this wonderful concert of the most beloved music of Handel. Come early for the best seats.
