Religious leaders in San Diego are joining with others across the country in staging a nationwide "Stand Up For Religious Freedom" rally on Friday, March 23 at noon.
The rally is in response to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' mandate that all employers provide free contraceptives, sterilization and abortion-inducing drugs through their health plans, according to a press release distributed by Catholic Radio of San Diego.
"The HHS provided a 'religious exemption' so narrow that it would exclude Catholic hospitals, universities and charities, forcing these institutions to act in direct opposition to Catholic teaching through the health care plans they provide," the release said.
The San Diego Rally for Religious Freedom will take place from noon-1 p.m. at the San Diego County Administration Building on 1600 Pacific Coast Highway.
Religious leaders planning to attend include Bishop Flores, Bishop George McKinney, Dr Jim Garlow, Pastor Netz Gomez, Kathy Marler, Pastor Chris Clark, Dran Reese, Dr Jennifer Roback Morse, Dr George Delgado, Dr Derry Connolly, Thomas McKenna, Hugh Largey, Timmerie Millington, and others.
Organizers suggest people arrive early to find parking or arrange a carpool. Attendees are asked to bring "Religious Freedom" signs.
