Second Chance joins the national #GivingTuesday movement

Second Chance San Diego has joined #GivingTuesday, a first of its kind effort that will harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners —charities, families, businesses and individuals — to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

Coinciding with the Thanksgiving holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday will inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they support and help create a better world.

Taking place Dec., 3 -- the Tuesday after Thanksgiving -- #GivingTuesday will harness the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays dedicated to giving, similar to how Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days that are, today, synonymous with holiday shopping.

Since 1993, Second Chance San Diego has been helping people transform their own lives by providing job readiness training and placement services, supported by mental health counseling, sober living housing, and financial literacy for adults and youth. Honoring 20 years of proudly serving the local community, Second Chance has made it a goal to raise an additional $20,000 to help serve the local community. Additionally, Second Chance will be launching a social media campaign Drop Everything and Give Me 20 to encourage members of the community to stand up, get creative and help get their fellow community members gainful employment. In addition to raising funds, we also want to raise awareness so be sure to send us your videos and photos.

Here’s some great ways to help:

• Challenge 20 friends to donate $20 to Second Chance;

• Make a video doing 20 pushups in 20 seconds;

• Show us 20 smiles;

• Volunteer 20 hours;

• Donate 20 pairs of shoes for our graduates;

• Donate 20 packets of seeds for our garden;

• Show us 20 high-fives;

• Photograph 20 friends dressed as zombies holding $1 each;

• Provide 20 job leads;

• Send us 20 holiday cards to distribute to incarcerated youths.
