Women Empowered initiative nominated for Classy Awards

Related Special Reports

PCI (Project Concern International)'s Women Empowered initiative has been chosen as a Top 5 Nominee for the Fifth Annual CLASSY Awards, a social impact awards ceremony that honors the most outstanding and compelling philanthropic achievers around the world.

The Women Empowered (WE) initiative promotes the economic and social empowerment of women through the formation of self-managed and self-sustaining savings groups. It addresses women's lack of power over household assets and income and gaps in available financing for poor female entrepreneurs.

By organizing vulnerable women into economic and social empowerment groups and providing training in financial management, entrepreneurship and leadership development, WE encourages women to meet regularly to discuss issues of mutual interest, pool their limited financial resources, plan for the future and problem solve together.

The WE initiative has been nominated in the category of Women's Rights alongside globally-recognized organizations and programs such as the Half the Sky Movement, the Polaris Project, Just Like My Child Foundation and Witness.

"Investing in empowering a woman is a multigenerational, high-yield investment with multiplied impact," explained Sarah Emerson, Director, Women Empowered Initiative. "We are thrilled to be nominated as a program that is helping women to change the face of poverty in their communities."

The United Nations Foundation partners with the CLASSY Awards annually, bringing together an international panel of experts from organizations like American Red Cross, Teach for America, Human Rights Campaign and Invisible Children. They will vote to determine the finalist in each category.

The winners will be announced at the CLASSY Awards event held on May 3rd and the entire event will broadcast live worldwide via the internet. Not only is it an honor to be a part of this respected event, but positions PCI and its programs as significant catalysts for social progress and monumental change.
