The San Diego Chargers and running back Ryan Mathews have teamed up with Kaiser Permanente to host the second annual Bolt to the Q 5K to help homeless moms and children get much-needed resources.

"I know first-hand what these moms endure because my mother and I were homeless for a short time when I was little," Mathews said. "I wouldn't have the life I have now if it wasn't for my mom getting a helping hand and then doing everything she could to support me, even working three jobs. So I encourage all levels of runners to sign-up for the Bolt to the Q because not only will it be a good time, but we can also help families get the support they need."

The Kaiser Permanente Bolt to the Q 5K & Kids 1/2 Mile Fun Run is on Saturday, July 21 and starts at 7 a.m. Entries are available on http://chargers5k.com. Registration is limited to 3,000 participants and the event is expected to sell out.

Proceeds benefit Trish & Ryan Mathews' Door of Hope Chest, a nonprofit charitable foundation overseen by the Salvation Army.

Mathews' Door of Hope Chest strives to ease the transition for homeless moms and children into their new homes by providing housewares such as bedding, towels and cookware. The foundation also provides services such as job counseling and parenting classes

The Bolt to the Q starts at Chargers Park and finishes on the 50-yard line at Qualcomm Stadium. The 1/2 Mile Fun Run for children will be held at the stadium. All participants will receive a Nike Dry-Fit Bolt to the Q T-Shirt. The top three finishers in each age division and all children participating in the 1K Fun Run will receive an award.

"The Kaiser Permanente Bolt to the Q presents a unique opportunity for all San Diegans to get fit and have fun, and at the same time help homeless moms and children get the assistance they need," said Mary Ann Barnes, Senior Vice President and Executive Director for Kaiser Permanente San Diego. "Come out on July 21st to run, walk, or just enjoy the festivities; and help us help the Door of Hope Chest. See you on the 50 yard line!"
