New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is endorsing California Assemblyman Nathan Fletcher's independent bid for San Diego mayor.
The Fletcher campaign on Thursday released a statement from the three-term New York mayor that says Fletcher represents an alternative to partisan gridlock.
The announcement comes five days before voters in the nation's eighth-largest city go to the polls in a hard-fought contest among four well-known, well-financed candidates.
Fletcher jumped in polls after he left the Republican Party in March to run as an independent. He has made wariness with partisan bickering a centerpiece of his campaign.
In 2007, Bloomberg left the Republican Party to become independent.
