The San Diego County Apartment Association board of directors unanimously endorsed City Councilmember Carl DeMaio for mayor of San Diego.
“Carl DeMaio will help make housing more affordable for San Diego’s middle-class families,” said SDCAA President John Modlin. “In addition to his leadership on policies to keep the cost of housing affordable, Carl has demonstrated his commitment to sound fiscal policy, improving infrastructure deficiencies, and is a strong advocate for small businesses. We strongly believe Carl DeMaio’s vision, leadership and track record make him the best choice to be San Diego’s next mayor.”
SDCAA’s board is impressed with DeMaio’s grasp of rental-related issues and opposition to tax and fee increases. In last year’s "Pathway to Prosperity" policy document, DeMaio outlined numerous reforms to help spur the construction of additional housing in San Diego, such as the update of community plans, regulatory reform and strong support for mixed-use infill development, Modlin said.
“During this economic downturn, many families have lost their homes, and rentals have become a critical safety net. We need to make sure that the rental housing sector remains free of unfair government mandates as they serve our residents,” DeMaio said.
Consumer needs determine the diversity in the housing market, and Modlin said DeMaio understands that government mandates can impede growth, impose costs and result in more costly housing for the middle class.
DeMaio, who finished first in the June primary election for mayor, is running against Rep. Bob Filner in the November election.
