Bilbray concedes to Peters in Congressional race

Related Special Reports

Democrat Scott Peters can now call himself the Congressman-elect of California’s 52nd Congressional District.

Reports spread Friday morning that his opponent in the race, incumbent Republican Brian Bilbray, had conceded to Peters, capping a string of high-profile election victories for Democrats in the county.

Democrats Sherri Lightner and Dave Roberts had earlier claimed victories in the District 1 San Diego City Council and District 3 San Diego County Board of Supervisors races, respectively. Though non-partisan races, it was thought to be possible, if not likely, both would be Republican wins. Roberts’ victory over Republican Steve Danon was recognized by the Danon campaign on Thursday.

According to the latest vote tallies, released Thursday evening and accounting for 355,000 of 475,000 absentee and provisional ballots left to be counted, Peters held a lead over Bilbray of 3,877 votes, for 50.72 percent of the vote.

Bilbray called Peters Friday morning to congratulate him, and later issued a statement.

“I would like to take this moment to thank all the supporters of my campaign,” Bilbray said in the release. “This was an expensive and hard-fought campaign that drew national interest. I appreciated the spirited dialogue that often accompanies campaigns like this.”

He went on to say that the time had arrived to put political ideologies aside in hopes for finding common ground in addressing the nation’s issues.

“Looking back, I take great pride in what my team has been able to accomplish in my time in Congress,” Bilbray continued, noting environmental bills he’d helped pass in Congress and stating that he’d continue fighting for causes in which he believes.

Peters will be sworn into his new office in January.
