It is the goal of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority to plan, design and operate San Diego International Airport in a manner that shows the utmost respect for our unique natural setting: an urban center on the shore of San Diego Bay. Every aspect of the existing and future activities at the airport are designed to protect these natural resources, as well as the health and well-being of the traveling public that pass through our facility, our surrounding neighborhoods and communities, and the people who work at the airport.
The Airport Authority is carrying out its sustainability goals through new construction projects, including The Green Build. So called for its focus on sustainability, The Green Build will pursue Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification. Goals of the project’s sustainable design include decreased water usage, reduced energy consumption and use of alternative energy sources. Concrete is being recycled on the construction site and building materials are locally sourced to further minimize impact to our environment.
Created by the U.S. Green Building Council, LEED is an internationally recognized green building certification system that will help verify that The Green Build is developed with an emphasis on several key environmental areas, including energy savings, water efficiency, emissions reduction, improved indoor environmental quality and stewardship of resources. LEED certification is a complex process, but the Airport Authority is committed to protecting the airport’s unique urban setting.
One way the Airport Authority is educating its passengers on The Green Build’s sustainable features is through the Green Build Discovery Center. Located in the pre‐security area on the second floor of Terminal 2 West, the Discovery Center uses informational panels, color renderings and video to tell the story of The Green Build and the benefits that are on the way. The center itself was designed with sustainability in mind, using special inks, biodegradable materials and paste, and recycled paper products.
There are several ways to follow The Green Build’s progress, including taking a free airport tour, following us on Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and YouTube or by signing up for text message alerts. Visit san.org for more information.
