Related Special Reports

Today’s craft professional must constantly keep up with changes in technology and the latest principles in their field. ABC San Diego’s Apprenticeship Training Trust is committed to giving its students cutting edge instruction making them competitive in an ever-changing industry.

Sustainable design and construction, often called “green building,” is here to stay. ABC San Diego’s classroom training has always covered the newest techniques in efficient use of our natural resources, including wind and solar. In the past few years, more “green” courses have been added to the curriculum.

First year apprentices are now introduced to fundamental instruction in the green environment, green construction practices and green building rating systems. Apprentices learn through hands-on experience with green materials, methods, technologies and systems that can reduce water and energy use, improve air quality, enhance illumination and reduce or prevent waste and pollution during construction.

For journeymen, supervisors and contractors, ABC San Diego provides a range of green building courses available online for convenient on-demand training. Topics include the design and construction delivery systems of high performance green buildings; Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards; how green building affects water and wastewater systems; indoor environmental quality; green building commissioning; the impact of sustainable building on scheduling; evaluating subcontractors and suppliers; and much more.

It falls to the construction industry to make a difference in creating healthy buildings and a healthy environment. ABC San Diego’s apprenticeship committees will continue to add more eco-friendly technologies to the training ABCSD apprentices receive, educating graduates and supporting new and practical solutions for protecting and conserving our air, water, energy and land for many generations to come.
