ABC San Diego was saddened by the passing of two influential construction industry instructors and mentors in 2012.
Dave Rifkin taught seminars and workshops for many years in addition to his active participation in several industry trade associations. Rifkin had worked for R. J. Lanthier since 1998.
The ABC Sheet Metal/HVAC Apprenticeship Program was truly fortunate to have Rifkin as a teacher from 2004 - 2010. Rifkin generously shared his years of experience and knowledge with students in the classroom. He kept the students challenged in such a way that they stayed fully engaged in their training, benefiting from the hands-on labs he designed. Rifkin enhanced the quality of education and training in the ABC apprenticeship program and was named the ABC "Instructor of the Year" in 2007.
Paul Chilson was a new addition to the ABC instructional team but already had built a strong rapport with the students, other instructors and the staff. Chilson taught for the Home Builders Institute at the San Diego Job Corps for eight years, Plumbing-Heating-Cooling-Contractors Association of San Diego for the past four years, and most recently as a plumbing teacher at Castle Park High School.
Chilson was a tremendous asset to ABC’s Plumbing/Pipefitting Apprenticeship Program. His knowledge of the industry, compassion and enthusiasm made him a great teacher.
Both Rifkin and Chilson shaped the successful careers of hundreds of craft professionals in San Diego County and beyond. While both will be missed, their legacy will continue and they will not be forgotten.
