A history of experience

At first, it is surprising to hear Jeff Stone, Bob Reck, and Gary Bryant speak in glowing terms about a bank. After all, they are, respectively, chief credit officer, first vice president and vice president of business banking at a credit union — North Island Credit Union. But, the bank in question, San Diego Trust and Savings Bank, was not like other banks. In fact, in many respects, it was more like a credit union. And, it was the invaluable training ground for the three Island executives.

SDT&S was a San Diego bank, and only a San Diego bank, from the day it opened. The Island, too, is San Diego born and bred, with access worldwide, but branches only in San Diego County.

SDT&S’s culture was one of fiscal responsibility, community support, and intensive employee training. Business services at The Island also emphasizes attentive customer (member) service, strong community involvement, and ongoing employee education.

Like SDT&S, at The Island, maintaining integrity and putting people first is a priority:

“San Diego Trust taught us that doing the right thing is as important as growth and maximizing profits,” said Bob Reck. “Doing the right thing does not equate to being overly generous, but always being fair and consistent.”

“Jeff, Bob, and I developed skills we learned from our SDT&S mentors. And what we learned during the 80s and 90s, still applies today,” according to Gary Bryant. “The focus was, and is, always on putting the customer in the right product or service.”

In 1994, during an era of banking mergers, SDT&S was acquired and absorbed by a national bank. In one sense, all that is left of SDT&S’s local focus is their historic building in downtown San Diego. But, in another sense, their business banking philosophy and service lives on at The Island.

Perhaps, member business owner Teresa Frey of Ray Frey Auto Center said it best: “When we opened our business in 2006, North Island Credit Union was our first choice to take care of our business banking needs. We are very happy with the level of service and products we receive.”

The Island offers a full line of business services including remote deposit, ACH origination and business loans. For more information, call 800-293-6494.
