Construction is under way in Carlsbad on a new 37,000-square-foot Pizza Port store, according to a local contractor.
"We just poured the slab (July 24)," said Jeff Weeks, vice president of TFW Construction of San Diego.
The two-story building — the fifth location for Pizza Port, not including its bottle shop, according to its website — will be located off Palomar Airport Road in Bressi Ranch.
This new facility will be "large in scale, yet feel low-key," Weeks said.
"We're fortunate to find a home down the street from a future Lowe's," Weeks said, adding in terms of building it, "everything has been going smoothly, with no surprises."
Set to finish April 1, 2013, the new store is designed — with supervision by Smith Consulting Architects — to combine vintage elements with industrial and modern touches.
"When you walk inside, there will be a brick veneer and varnished wood," Weeks said. "They're trying to blend the old look with the new one."
As an added feature, a glass "curtain" will separate the brewery from the restaurant.
Weeks said while Pizza Port will continue its brewing at the satellite locations, the new facility will allow for mass production and canning of its award-winning libation.
Weeks said he would not discuss the building's cost.
Representatives from Pizza Port were unavailable for comment.
Twenty-five years ago, siblings Gina and Vince Marsaglia bought a small pizza shop in Solana Beach. In 1992, Pizza Port began producing craft beers, which have won numerous medals.
